Forty years ago during the Cold War, Eastern Bloc athletes dominated women’s sports. But that would change with the introduction of Joan Lind Van Blom, a former high school flag girl who received the chance of a lifetime. With the help of a determined coach in Long Beach, California, she made her way to the ’76 Olympics as one of the first female competitive rowers in US history. With grace and grit, she carved a new path and altered the landscape of rowing forever.
