Theater Watch: What to See in January

The New Year has begun, and with it, it has brought a variety of cinematic “Must Watches!” While December closed off 2015 with a big bang presenting films such as The Danish Girl or The Revenant, January welcomes 2016 with a new set of fascinating, suspenseful and beautifully written pieces for its audience. From documentary, horror and physiological thriller, January’s movie watch list is a great way to kick-off the year’s cinematic accomplishments. Now without further ado here is the Newport Beach Film Festivals “January: What to Watch.”

 

Troublemakers: The Story of Land Art: Written and Directed by James Crump
A documentary film unearthing the history of land at in the tumultuous late 1960s and early 1970s, Troublemakers follows a group of renegade New York artists that sought to transcend the limitations of painting and sculpture by producing earthworks on a monumental scale. Release Date: January 8, 2016

 

The Treasure: Written and Directed by Corneliu Porumboiu
Costi, a peaceful family man, is approached by his cash-strapped neighbor with an intriguing proposition: if Costi helps him locate the treasure buried in his grandparents’ garden, then he will receive half of whatever they find. Release Date: January 8, 2016

 

Yosemite: Written & Directed by Gabrielle Demeestere
It’s the fall of 1985. The intertwining tales of three 5th grade friends, Chris, Joe and Ted, unfold in the suburban paradise of Palo Alto, as the threat of a mountain lion looms over the community. Release Date: January 1, 2016

 

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi: Written by Chuck Hogan; Directed by Michael Bay
On the eleventh anniversary of 9/11, an attack takes place on the U.S. Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA Annex in Benghazi, killing four Americans including the U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. Release Date: January 15, 2016

 

The Lady in the Van: Written by Alan Bennett; Directed by Nicholas Hytner
A man forms an unexpected bond with Miss Shepherd, a transient woman, living in her van, that has been parked in his driveway for 15 years. Release Date: January 15,2016

 

The Benefactor: Written and Directed by Andrew Renzi
A newly married couple is forced to navigate the intense interest of a powerful, mysterious, and possessive philanthropist in an attempt to relive his past. Release Date: January 15, 2016

The Finest Hours: Written by Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson; Directed by Craig Gillespie
On February 18, 1952, a massive blizzard struck the coast of Cape Cod destroying a pair of oil tankers and trapping more than 30 sailors. As word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard station in Chatham, Massachusetts a daring rescue operation is ordered in an attempt to save lives.

 

Mojave: Written & Directed by William Monahan
Thomas, a violent, insecure and self-doubtful artist must come to terms with his inner struggles to protect himself and his family from a homicidal, chameleon-like drifter, Jack, who follows him back from the desert to his privileged LA lifestyle. Release Date: January 22, 2016
